Hon. Mary Maingi is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mwea Constituency in Kirinyaga County, Kenya. She made history by becoming the first female MP for Mwea since independence, securing 50,667 votes in a competitive race against six opponents, including the incumbent Kabinga Wathayu.
Before entering politics, Hon. Maingi was a successful entrepreneur, having run her insurance brokerage firm, HP Insurance Brokers Limited, for 15 years. She also worked as a unit manager at AAR Health Services.
As MP, she has focused on youth empowerment, education, and infrastructure development in Mwea. She has been involved in initiatives like expanding resources at the Mwea Technical and Vocational College and introducing financial management programs for motorcycle operators. Additionally, she has distributed bursaries to deserving students and prioritized electricity connectivity within the constituency.
Hon. Maingi holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, both from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
The educational journey commenced in the year 2000 with Business Writing Skills training at the British Council, Nairobi. This was followed in 2001 by obtaining a Certificate of Proficiency in Insurance from the College of Insurance. In 2002, further specialization in the field of insurance was pursued, leading to the attainment of a Diploma in Insurance (AIIK) from the College of Insurance in 2003.
Between 1997 and 1999, the individual pursued a Diploma in Public Relations (LCC&LI) at the London Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Thereafter, between 2003 and 2006, a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com with Honors) was obtained from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Advancing further in academia, between 2007 and 2009, a Master of Business Administration (MBA with Honors) was also earned from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
In subsequent years, the individual engaged in extensive leadership and governance training. In 2013, participation in Leadership for Purpose was undertaken under the guidance of Dr. Myles Monroe in Nairobi. In 2017, various governance and leadership certifications were achieved, including the Corporate Governance Training for Directors from the Center for Corporate Governance, Nairobi, Balance Scorecard Training from Visionary Leadership & Management Consultants, Nairobi, and a Board Competence Certification in Rhetoric and Leadership Development under the Female Future Leadership Program, offered by the Federation of Kenya Employers in conjunction with the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO).
In 2018, further leadership enhancement took place through the Women Directors’ Leadership Summit at both Strathmore Business School and Cranfield University, UK. In 2019, additional certifications were obtained, including Board Competence Certification in the Female Future Leadership Program from the Federation of Kenya Employers in conjunction with the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO) and the Mwongozo Induction Program & Training on Governance for Boards of State Corporations from the Executive Office of the President.

From 1993 to 1999, she worked at AAR Health Services as a Unit Manager, gaining valuable experience in healthcare services and management.
In 1999, she became the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HP Insurance Brokers Limited, a position she held for over two decades until 2022, overseeing strategic growth and operations in the insurance industry.
Alongside her corporate career, she actively engaged in governance roles. Between 2011 and 2021, she served as a Board Director at Emergency Medical Services (E-Plus – Red Cross), contributing to emergency healthcare services.
From 2016 to 2019, she was appointed to the Postal Corporation of Kenya, where she served as a Board Director, the Chairman of the Audit Board Committee, and a Member of the HR Board Committee, playing a key role in oversight and decision-making within the organization.
