In his first term, Governor Sang served as Chairman of the Governors’ Intergovernmental Relations Committee after being elected as the second Governor of Nandi County. At the age of 32, he became the youngest Governor in Kenya since the adoption of the devolved system in 2010.
As Governor, Sang has been at the forefront in spearheading infrastructural reforms and developmental progress in the heath, agriculture, transport and education sectors among others in Nandi county. In 2019, Sang was recognized as the among the most influential young African in the Law and Governance category of the Africa Youth Awards. At the same time, the County Government of Nandi was ranked position two in the Open Government Partnership Global Innovations Awards.
Stephen Kipyego Sang, currently the Governor of Nandi County, has a notable educational background. He attended Kapsabet High School in Nandi County before pursuing higher education at the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree in 2008.
An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a Bachelors of Laws Degree from the University of Nairobi, Sang also made history in 2013 when he was elected the youngest Senator at the age of 28 in Kenya’s inaugural Senate.
At the Senate, Governor Sang served as the Chairperson of the Sessional Committee on Delegated Legislation, Vice Chairperson of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights and a representative of Kenyan Parliament in the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU). His legislative record speaks for itself having sponsored a record six bills during a single parliamentary term.
During his tenure at the Senate, Senator Sang championed for the compensation of Nandi residents affected by historical injustices. He went ahead to present a petition on historical injustices against the Talai clan by the British Colonial government.
Stephen Sang is the current Governor of Nandi County, having retained his seat in the 2022 elections. He is a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and has a background as a strong political figure within the Rift Valley region. Before his governorship, Sang served as the Nandi County Senator, a role that set the stage for his gubernatorial bid. His leadership style and political direction focus on economic development, particularly agriculture, youth empowerment, and improving healthcare in the county.
During his tenure as governor, Sang has pushed for agricultural reforms, such as promoting agribusiness among the youth through the "Farming is Cool" program and subsidizing farm inputs. He has also worked on enhancing education and healthcare, with plans to expand Nandi's referral hospital and offer partial scholarships for youth technical training. His victory in the 2022 elections was largely attributed to his alignment with then-Deputy President William Ruto's political agenda, further solidifying his standing within the UDA party and the larger Kenya Kwanza coalition.
